Clear width
Measure the back wall at the floor, rod height, and upper-shelf height. Record the smallest number.
Usable depth
Measure from the back wall to the closed door or opening plane. Note protruding trim and handles.
Clear height
Measure floor to ceiling in several places. Record soffits, sloped ceilings, fixtures, and access panels.
Opening and doors
Record opening width and height, door type, swing, hinges, tracks, and any area blocked when open.
Obstructions
Locate baseboards, outlets, switches, vents, lights, trim, access panels, and uneven corners.
Translate the room into zones
Sketch the closet from the front. Mark long-hang garments, double-hang potential, shelves, drawers, shoes, door storage, and seasonal overflow. Then test whether doors and drawers have enough clearance to operate.
When a product nearly matches your measurement, use the manufacturer’s required installation clearance—not the advertised outside width alone.
